The annual United Nations Climate Summit, COP25, is held in Chile in December this year. A group of professionals and social movements has launched a national campaign to get the Chilean government to declare a climate emergency before December.
“Our goal is to get the UN Summit to declare a climate emergency,” explained Carlos Mancilla who is one of the organisers. “This campaign is joining all climate activist and social movement together to speak with one voice. We are doing a crowdfunding, a social media campaign and music events in different cities in Chile to raise awareness, and to create commitment among non-activist people. Because we need the entire population to get involved now.”
On 24 August 2019, 17,000 people had signed the petition. Argentina declared a climate emergency on 17 July 2019.
