WeMove.EU – a citizens’ movement campaigning for “a European Union committed to social and economic justice, environmental sustainability and citizen-led democracy” – launched a campaign on 27 September 2018 asking its members to call three specific Members of the European Parliament and ask them to reject any candidate for the EU Commission who is not committed to declaring a climate emergency.
“Ask your MEP: declare a climate emergency in Europe!”
WeMove.EU wrote in a newsletter:
“We’re living through a climate emergency – real action is needed to steer us to safety and protect us from the most terrifying effects of rising global temperatures. But in Europe, it’ll only happen if the 27 new candidates hoping to be appointed to lead the European Commission to take climate change seriously.
In a few days, MEPs will decide whether to accept the nomination of these candidates: we’re asking them to reject any candidate for the EU Commission who is not committed to declaring a climate emergency.
A quick phone call is an incredibly powerful way to get a message directly to MEPs. By flooding their offices with calls, we can tell them how important taking action to avoid complete climate breakdown is to us all. And we know hearing from members of the public is not something they’re used to so it’s bound to get their attention.
It will take just a few minutes, but we’ve made it really easy and given you tips on what you could say.
Take 5 minutes to call an MEP to tell them to only confirm the new European Commission if they can guarantee to face the climate emergency with bold action. Call an MEP NOW.”
